Navigational AI Overviews now appear on 10.33% of branded search queries. In January 2025, that figure was 0.74%. The 12-month growth rate is 1,295.9%, according to Semrush's analysis of 10 million keywords. That means a buyer who already knows your brand, who types your name into Google with the intent to reach you, is now getting an AI-generated summary before they see your website. You do not control that summary. Most brands are not even measuring it.
The Shift Most Brands Have Missed
AI Overviews started as a feature tied to informational queries. When someone searched "how does project management software work," getting an AI summary made intuitive sense. Brands adapted by treating AI Overviews as an SEO content concern, something that affected blog articles and informational landing pages.
The 2025 data destroys that assumption. Navigational queries are searches with explicit brand intent. They include searches like "[your company name] pricing," "[your company name] reviews," or simply "[your company name]." These are high-intent, high-value searches. These are buyers at the bottom of the funnel, moments away from a decision.
Navigational AI Overviews grew from under 1% to over 10% of navigational queries in 10 months. That number will not go backwards.
What the Data Says About Citation Volatility
The Semrush study surfaces a second finding that compounds the problem. Year-over-year, 82% of the AI Overview keywords present in one measurement period were different 12 months later. The specific searches triggering AI Overviews change constantly, and monthly snapshot monitoring is structurally unable to track that cycle.
The volatility extends to which sources AI Overviews cite. Around 70% of pages cited in AI Overviews change over a 2-3 month period, and those citation changes are not linked to traditional organic rankings. A page can lose its position in AI Overviews while holding the number one organic slot. A page sitting at position seven can suddenly become the cited source. Neither event shows up in standard SEO rank tracking.
Traditional monitoring is not built for this pattern. Weekly rank reports tell you nothing about whether AI is citing your brand accurately, citing you at all, or synthesising a summary built on a competitor's comparison content.
The Stakes Are Higher Than CTR
Most coverage of AI Overviews centres on click-through rates. The numbers are severe: organic CTR has fallen 61% for queries where AI Overviews appear, dropping from 1.76% to 0.61%, according to Seer Interactive's September 2025 study. For every 100 clicks that used to reach the top-ranking organic page, only 42 remain today.
But the CTR framing misses the brand impact entirely.
When an AI Overview appears on a navigational query for your brand, the buyer reads that summary. The summary shapes their perception of your product, your positioning, your pricing, and your reputation, before they ever land on your site. If the summary is accurate and favourable, you benefit. If it is incomplete, outdated, or drawing from a competitor's comparison article, you lose ground at the exact moment you were closest to winning.
The brands that are being cited in AI Overviews are seeing a 91% lift in paid CTR. Citation creates credibility. Credibility creates conversion readiness. The brands not measuring their AI Overview presence are flying blind on one of the highest-leverage surfaces in modern search.
What You Can Do Starting Today
The three actions that move fastest when navigational AI Overviews are involved are straightforward, but they require discipline to sustain.
First, establish a baseline. Run your brand name and top product names through Google Search and document exactly what AI Overviews appear, what they say, and which sources they cite. Do this weekly, not monthly. The data shows citation sources shift every 2-3 months. Monthly reviews miss entire cycles of change.
Second, audit the sources AI Overviews pull from for your brand. If AI is citing a competitor's comparison page when summarising your product, that is a content gap with a measurable fix. Create authoritative, direct content that answers the question the AI Overview is synthesising, in your voice, with your data.
Third, structure content for AI extraction. FAQ schema drives 3.1 times higher answer extraction rates. Content with explicit data attribution is cited 4.2 times more frequently than equivalent claims without referenced sources. These are structural optimisations, not content rewrites.
The Monitoring Problem KozoPulse Solves
Navigational AI Overviews are now part of the brand visibility equation alongside chatbot recommendations. The buyer who searches your name is getting an AI-filtered answer. Most tools built for traditional SEO do not track what that answer says, how it changes week over week, or which signals drive the shifts.
KozoPulse monitors how AI describes your brand across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, tracking sentiment, competitive positioning, and citation patterns that determine what your next buyer reads before they ever reach your website. Start your free trial at kozopulse.com.
